- dtex = tex × 10
- denier = tex × 9 (about 5315 ÷ Ne)
Direct and indirect count systems
Ne and Nm are indirect systems: they state length per unit of weight, so a higher number means a finer yarn. Ne counts the number of 840-yard hanks in one pound; Nm counts kilometres per kilogram. Tex, dtex and denier are direct systems: they state weight per unit of length, so a higher number means a coarser yarn. Tex is grams per 1,000 metres, dtex is grams per 10,000 metres and denier is grams per 9,000 metres.
Reading a count such as Ne 30/1
The first number is the count and the second is the number of plies. Ne 30/1 is a single yarn of count 30; Ne 30/2 is two Ne 30 yarns twisted together, with a resultant count of about Ne 15. This converter works on the single-yarn count.
